Back to School

While I was on my way to work the other day, I noticed several vehicles that seemed to be driving way too fast in a marked school zone.

This brings me to writing this short article on pointing out several safety tips for both children and their parents when traveling to and from school;

• Make sure when planning your child’s route to school, you choose the most
direct way with the fewest street crossings and if possible, intersections
that have crossing guards.
• Practice walking the route with your child and tell them to stay away from
any parks, vacant lots, fields and other areas where there will be few people
around.
• Always teach your child to NEVER talk to strangers or accept gifts and/or
rides from strangers. Remember that a stranger is ANYONE that you or your
child doesn’t know well or trust.
• Try and ensure that your child walks to school with a friend, sibling or
neighbor.
• Teach your kids to recognize, understand and obey all traffic signs.
• When driving your children, drop them off as close to the school as possible
and do not leave until they have entered the building.
• If your child bikes to school make sure that they have a proper bike helmet
that meets or exceeds the safety ratings.
• Be sure that your child knows their phone number and address, your work
number, the number of another trusted adult and that they know how to call
911 for emergencies.

I hope all the children out there enjoy this new school year!!!
